The African Union Verification Team, led by Head of Capacity Development Unit (Eustace Chaumbi) and six members representing the three components: military, police, and civilian, arrived in Tripoli yesterday for a three-day visit to the Executive Secretariat and Planning Element.
During the visit, the team will hold important discussions with the region to verify its capabilities, as part of the ongoing arrangements to declare the region’s readiness in accordance with the recommendations of the 15th meeting of the Technical Committee for Defense, Security, and Safety, paragraph (Z) dated May 12, 2023.
The team had previously conducted a similar visit to Egypt, where it inspected the Egyptian contribution to the region, represented by a military battalion, a composite police unit, in addition to an engineering company and a field hospital.
The team conducted a field visit to the headquarters of the brigade and the administrative base of the region in Cairo, and got acquainted with the work there. The Egyptian unit contributed with its vehicles and equipment, where it conducted a formation and a statement about readiness and movement.
The team then visited the Training and Excellence Center for the region, where it inspected the composite police unit contributed.
In Tripoli, the Executive Secretary, accompanied by the Head of the Planning Element, received the Verification Team at his office on Thursday morning, 2023/11/09. In his opening welcome remarks, the Executive Secretary stressed that he highly values this visit and hopes that it will be successful.
Meetings began immediately between the Planning Element and the delegation, and will continue for three days, covering the review of regional policies, working documents, and its components.
