The seminar, titled “The Use of Cyberspace for Terrorist Purposes in Africa” commenced on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at the African Center for Studies and Research on Terrorism in the Algerian capital. The seminar is organized by the Planning Element of the Capacity, in collaboration with the center, and will span four days, with the participation of experts from the United Nations, AfroPol, and specialized centers across the continent, as well as participants from Capacity member states. This activity is considered a significant event at the continental level and perhaps the only activity that extensively discusses this topic with the participation of specialized experts.
The opening ceremony was attended by a representative of the Algerian government and received coverage from local media. It is worth noting that the Planning Element will carry out another activity on counterterrorism in cooperation with the Egyptian Center for Peacekeeping Training in Cairo at the end of October, as part of the Planning Element’s work plan for 2023, which has witnessed over eight activities since the beginning of the year and will conclude with the implementation of a Command Centers Exercise at the end of November.
The seminar was inaugurated in the presence of the Director of the African Center for Studies and Research on Terrorism, the Executive Secretary of the Capacity’s North Afriquia Region, and the head of the Planning Element, along with a representative from AfroPol and a representative from the Algerian government. Representatives from regional economic mechanisms and organizations on the continent, including the Southern, Eastern, and Central regions, as well as the Training Center for Conflict Settlement in Tanzania (IPCS), and representatives from member states, participated in the seminar. Additionally, around seven specialized experts in the field of cybersecurity from dedicated centers participated. Furthermore, four specialized experts from dedicated centers and United Nations agencies will participate in the seminar via virtual space.
A summary booklet will be published, containing an overview of the discussions held during the seminar, which will serve as an important reference among the center’s publications.
